Why I don't recommend PeoplePerHour
tl;dr: Why you should stay away from PeoplePerHour
Over the last few years (since 2018) i’ve been working on PeoplePerHour as a CERT 5 Designer & Developer. For those of you who do not know what is PeoplePerHour, it is a freelance website based on the UK.
PeoplePerHour fees are up to 20% per payment , even though it’s incredibly greedy to charge that much, compared to Fiverr which is about 5% , It was fine . the payment withdrawal was 48 hours like ALL freelance websites , which is very logical.
You only get a certain number of credits per month to apply for jobs, if you run out to credits, you have to pay more. So you are essentially paying PPH for the privilege of earning money for them.
During 2020 , at the peak of Freelancing field and the pandemic going , PeoplePerHour decided to go even more greedy ,They disabled live chat support and introduced Clearing periods.
Clearing periods limit the withdrawal of funds from PeoplePerHour, So we have to wait 14 days to withdraw our money! However they let you spend the money **ONLY in their platform during that period **
Earnings are added to your available balance and can be spent within PeoplePerHour instantly.
So , not only they cut 20% Fees (Not to mention withdrawal fees) , they keep YOUR MONEY for 14 Days !!
This makes no sense , they are saying that we need extra checks before we can receive our money due to fraud, but yet we can freely spend the money on your platform.
For some of us, our families rely solely on the money we earn from PPH and we live from invoice payment to invoice payment and for this, we work very hard. Everyone who has had experiences of being a freelancer knows that cashflow and being paid on time are big challenges. We are hungry, tired, our rents are behind, we are unable to pay our mortgages on time. Some of us do not know if we will be able to pay our internet and phone bills to enable us to keep working on the platform. Some of us have had to use foodbanks and negotiate with landlords and banks, even though we have money sitting in our escrow on People Per Hour that could cover all this instantly. - Open Letter of complaint for PeoplePerHour
Besides all of that , when your customer raise a complaint or request for refund , They DO NOT hear anything from you. If customer ask for full refund , even though you did everything , you won’t be given a chance to dispute back .
if the customer just ask for full refund and you did the job , they will get it and no one will care if you worked weeks on months on that gig.
Don’t you even try contacting the Support , they wil get back to you (hopefully) in weeks with an automated message.
It is incredibly easy for any buyer to scam you. They can simply ignore you when the job is done and refuse to pay the invoice, and PPH always sides with the buyer in my experience, and all you get from them is “there is nothing we can do”. They will tell you to ask for more deposit upfront, but this makes no difference whatsoever.
While they are a uk site, it is not uk friendly and they heavily modify reviews which you leave about your experience on trust pilot All of this lead to negative reviews on PeoplePerHour across the internet. 1.6/5 reviews on sitejabar
To sum up all of these , here is why you should stay away from PeoplePerHour:
-
20% commission on everything you earn and then charge you 20% tax on top of that when you get paid
-
When you want to withdraw your money they charge you 1.9%
-
No access to your money for 14 working days after you have been paid.
-
Customer service is nonexistent , and will always side with the buyer.
Most of the Freelancers in PeoplePerHour have already moved to similar websites like UpWork,Toptal etc where they really respect and understand their freelancers.
